Catching up with former student Alex Moran
Alex Moran was a two-year A level student at MPW Birmingham between 2013 and 2015. Alex achieved the MPW Principal’s Award last year as well as the CIFE Individual College Award in recognition of his outstanding A level results (AAA) and contribution to the college community. Having trained with the British Triathlon Olympic Development Squad whilst at his previous school for AS study, Alex chose to restart with different subject choices at MPW Birmingham in order to fulfil his goal of studying Law at Birmingham University. We catch up with Alex to discuss his studies and his training for the upcoming European Triathlon Championships.
How has your first year at university gone?
“I have finished my first year at Birmingham and achieved a 2:1 in my exams. The work and exams are quite different to A-levels so this year has been beneficial in terms of adjustment, before starting next year when the result will go towards my overall degree.”
Have you been able to maintain your role as an athlete?
“I have enjoyed getting back into training properly this year. I secured a spot on the Hi-Performance Squad at University early in October and have been training around 25 hours each week ever since. I am now a professional triathlete and am being supported by University and the Hi-Performance Centre there. I am also now sponsored by Torq Performance Sports Nutrition, Beet-It, Canyon Bikes, Pedal Cover Insurance and True Start. I have also been selected as Men’s Captain of the University team.”
Are you competing in any upcoming events?
“I am going to Switzerland for a European Championship Test Event on 20th August which should be good. I have a qualifier for the actual European Championships the following week. Next year will be a year with a lot of travelling! I am hoping to go to the European Duathlon Championships in Soria, Spain in April and the European Triathlon Championships in Kitzbuel, Austria in May. We also have various training camps most of which are based in Mallorca. It should be a really exciting year!”
