2013 Awards Evening

Once again, December heralded our annual prize giving event at the college. As always with prize giving, it is a fantastic opportunity to meet students after their first term at university and see the progress they have made.

There is no doubt that the students always find their first term challenging, but always comment on how their A level studies have helped them to prepare for this. It is also a great chance to formally share the achievements of the students with parents and friends as well as colleagues.

As always, there was a real celebratory feel about the evening and I once again had the pleasure of presenting the awards. Our guest of honour this year was Dr Roger Charlton who presented the prizes to our prize winners and gave an inspirational talk to us. Our Principal, Mark also spoke to us and reiterated the idea that with hard work and determination anything is possible.

The prizes awarded to each student along with a short overview of their achievements are as follows:

PRIZEWINNERS 2013 – BIRMINGHAM

PRINCIPAL’S AWARD

Sweena Patel transferred to MPW in September 2011 to take two-year A level courses in Business Studies, Chemistry and Psychology having previously completed the first year of her AS level studies at Cadbury Sixth Form College gaining grades UDDD in Biology, Health & Social Care, Psychology and Spanish. Sweena improved her performance steadily throughout her time at MPW gaining good grades for her AS levels in the summer 2012 and in the summer of 2013 she achieved grades AAA. She is now reading Psychology at the University of Nottingham.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Ngoc Thao Linh Le (Linh) joined MPW in September 2011 to start AS level courses in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics having previously studied in Vietnam. She continued with her studies at MPW Birmingham in the academic year 2012-2013 continuing to A2 level studies in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics achieving grades AAA*A* respectively in summer 2013. Linh is now at the University of Warwick reading Accounting and Finance.

DENTISTRY AWARD (JOINT)

Hiral Sapa joined MPW from King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls’ in September 2012. Having achieved grades AA in Biology and Geography she took a short intensive A level retake course in Chemistry and was awarded grade A in Chemistry in January 2013. She is now studying Dentistry at the University of Sheffield. Kian Dhinsa joined MPW in September 2011 to take a short A level course in Chemistry having previously studied at King Edward’s School. In January 2012 he achieved grade A in Chemistry and, after taking a gap year, has now successfully gained a place to read Dentistry at King’s College London.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A ONE-YEAR A LEVEL STUDENT

Nathan Tomlinson joined MPW in September 2012 from King Edward’s School. Having previously studied on International Baccalaureate courses he joined MPW to study on one-year A level courses in Chemistry and Physics whilst studying A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics independently. In the summer of 2013 he achieved grades AA* in Chemistry and Physics, also achieving grades A*A* in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. He is now undertaking a gap year and is applying to universities, including the University of Cambridge, to study Natural Sciences or Physics.
