The course will cover specimen exam questions and answers as well as exam technique, and how to use terminology and technical terms.

It will not be possible to cover every aspect of each century and so we will focus upon a selection with the aim that students will be able to respond successfully to the required number of questions.

Unit 3 HART3 · Art and Architecture in Fifteenth-Century Europe

The focus here will be upon the Early Renaissance in Italy and the Northern Renaissance, looking at key examples to illustrate the following thematic areas:

Religious paintings Single figure sculpture Religious buildings
Narrative paintings Group sculpture Palace Design
Portraiture Religious sculpture  
Mythological painting Relief sculpture  

Patronage, the Influence of Antiquity and the Impact of Developments in Science and Perspective will also be covered.

Unit 4 HART4 · Art and Architecture in Sixteenth-Century Europe

The focus here will be upon the High Renaissance and Mannerism in Italy, looking at key examples to illustrate the following thematic areas.

Within these topics we will also address aspects of style, social and economic contexts and patronage.

Students wishing to revise the Unit 3 topics Art and Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Europe or Art and Architecture in Seventeenth Century Europe and the Unit 4 topic Art and Architecture in Europe and the United States of America between 1900 and 1945 should contact the Course Director as it may be possible to arrange individual or group tuition for these topics.
