The course examines key topic areas and extensive use will be made of exam-based A2 level questions to illustrate relevant principles. Revision notes and model answers will be provided, where appropriate.
The course consists of the following topics:
Unit 4 F324 · Rings, polymers and analysis
This unit continues the study of organic chemistry of unit 2 and looks at synthesis, isomerism and analysis of organic compounds.
- Carbonyl compounds
- Carboxylic acids and esters
- Amines and amino acids
Unit 5 F325 · Equilibria, energetics and elements
This unit continues the study of physical chemistry of units one and two, by looking at equilibrium, energetics and rate of reaction. The chemistry of transition elements is also studied.
- Acid-base equilibrium
- Rate equations
- Born Haber cycle
- Redox and electrode potentials
- Transition elements
