Activities & Sports
At MPW, we organise social and physical activities all year round providing our students a fun and relaxed environment to help them stay healthy, interact with peers who share common interests, enhance leadership skills and prepare for the future.
We believe studies are just part of the student experience; we encourage our students to take part in the social events ranging from raising awareness through a charity campaign, joining a debating session or simply stretching their legs and arms at the local climbing centre.
Students who love sport will have plenty of opportunity to meet up with likeminded friends – or make new ones through a large variety of sports clubs here at MPW.
The Summer Ball 2013
On the evening of 5th July, we held our annual Summer Ball. The event had been hotly anticipated for a number of months and had been preceded by a frantic flurry of dress buying, tuxedo hiring and hair styling! The student body had decided to hold the ball at Edgbaston Cricket Ground; a decision that proved to be an excellent one, due to the spacious function room we had been allocated and the excellent hospitality available.
MPW Birmingham Gap Year Report: Roxanne Sweeney in South America
After completing her A level studies at MPW Birmingham and securing grades A*AA, Roxanne decided to take a year out before embarking on studying at university. Her plans took her around the world and gave her exposure to some fantastic experiences, some of which she shares with us here.
International Student Farewell
After the final exams had finished, it came to the time of year where our A2 international students were preparing to return home for the summer. They will return to the UK in September where each of them will begin life at University. To celebrate their time spent together at MPW, they attended an evening out in Edgbaston to reminisce about their time in Birmingham.
Art Review of the Year
It has been a busy year in the art studio this year, with a record number of students enrolling on GCSE and A Level art courses. The course has seen a variety of approaches to coursework and exam projects which include oil paintings, moving image, ceramic sculptures, wildlife photography and painterly animation.
This year has been a productive one for the AS photography group with students visiting a variety of locations including Pakistan, China and Mount Snowdon. We chat to photography student Anna Moulin about her love of the camera, foxes and Mount Snowdon.
Describe your relationship with your camera
My camera is everything to me.
Every Tuesday afternoon, many of our students head off to the Doug Ellis Sports Centre to take part in various sports activities. While back at the college projectors are warmed up and popcorn is put in the microwave in anticipation of Cinema Club. Cinema Club is a weekly event run by A2 student Muhammad Shah. We caught up with Muhammad to discuss the films he picked for the MPW audience this year as well as some of the movies he is looking forward to in the coming months.
Sport 2012/2013: Football
After a season of mixed results in the 2011/2012 football season, this year, MPW Birmingham have finished the season undefeated. Tricky away fixtures against MPW Cambridge and Bath Academy have inspired exceptional defensive performances from the team, whilst the matches played at home allowed our creative players to express themselves going forward.
This year has seen the launch of Running Club at MPW Birmingham. Here at the college we are aware that a healthy body can make a healthy mind. Organised by A2 student Jenny Musgrave, the club takes place once a week and makes full use of the colleges location by using Birmingham University as its route.
The second project organised by our Envision group this academic year was the Comic Relief fundraising day. After much debate, it was decided that a fancy dress theme would be the best way of getting the maximum number of people involved, so on red nose day, students and staff alike donned their costumes and headed into college.
