The course examines key topic areas and extensive use will be made of exam-based A2 level questions to illustrate relevant principles. Revision notes and model answers will be provided, where appropriate.
Unit 4 6CH04 · General Principles of Chemistry I – Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry
Students will revise chemical kinetics and further their study of organic reaction mechanisms. The topics of entropy and equilibria show how chemists are able to predict quantitatively the direction and extent of chemical change. The organic chemistry will cover carbonyl compounds, plus carboxylic acids and their derivatives. We will deal with nomenclature, ideas of isomerism, bond polarity and bond enthalpy, reagents and reaction conditions, reaction types and mechanisms. Students are expected to use formulae and balance equations and calculate chemical quantities.
Unit 5 6CH05 · General Principles of Chemistry II – Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry
Students will revise electrode potentials and the concept of oxidation numbers and the use of redox half equations. We will study further chemistry related to redox and transition metals. The organic chemistry will focus on arenes and organic nitrogen compounds such as amines,
amides, amino acids and proteins. We will work on ideas of isomerism, bond polarity and bond enthalpy, reagents and reaction conditions, reaction types and mechanisms. Students are also expected to use formulae and balance equations and calculate chemical quantities.
