The course examines key topic areas and extensive use will be made of exam-based AS level questions to illustrate relevant principles. Revision notes and model answers will be provided, where appropriate.
The course consists of the following topics:
Unit 1 F321 · Atoms, bonds and groups
This unit looks at:
- The structure of the atom, how atoms bond and the relationship of bonding to the physical properties of different substances.
- Redox, reactions of acids and the chemistry of groups two and seven
Unit 2 F322 · Chains, energy and resources
This unit looks at:
- Basic physical and organic chemistry
- Environmental impact of chemical substances
- Chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and halogenoalkanes, energetics, rates of reaction and equilibrium.
