COVID-19

Published: 25 March 2020

We recognise that the current global Covid-19 outbreak is causing considerable concern for students and their families in the UK and around the world, and we are striving hard to provide an excellent MPW student experience and continuity in these unique and uncharted times. We have moved to face-to-face teaching at the college here in MPW Cambridge and transitioned to a full package of online teaching and student support, via our Virtual Learning Environment for e-learning and MS Teams to deliver e-teaching to all student groups, effective from 9.00am (GMT) Friday 20 March 2020.

Our online teaching solution means that we continue to deliver teaching true to the MPW method with small virtual classes, internal assessments and the highest level of personalised student support. Our move to online delivery has reflected the older age of our student body and their experience of, and aptitude for, virtual learning as they will experience in their higher education destinations. We have so far received very positive feedback on the transition to online teaching:

From a parent:

“Thank you for your forward planning, consistent and great support which has made the continuity of the school possible. We are very happy the virtual classes work so well, making this difficult time we all are going through easier.”

From another parent:

“You have been nothing short of brilliant... the best in service and quality of communication.”

The timing of lessons (timetables) is unchanged. Information about any timetable changes will continue to be posted to our VLE and via student emails both of which students should continue to access on a regular basis. Registers will be taken as per a normal day and lessons remain compulsory for students. Any immediate issues with students joining lessons should be addressed via the relevant Personal Tutor. Likewise, students’ 1-1 meetings with their Personal Tutor will continue as normal but via MS Teams or Skype.

Public exams

The Government has announced that there will be no A level or GCSE examinations taken in the summer. To help compensate for this MPW will be required to have some input on what grades we think students will obtain. To help us do this we will consult both assessment and non-assessment indicators as identified by the Government.

It is important to note that a student’s grade will also be influenced by the consideration of prior attainment, and we await full detail from the UK government on how these factors will be included. Some likely factors which will be considered are:

  • Mock exams
  • UCAS predicted grades
  • Homework
  • Overall attendance
  • Effort put into studying
  • Coursework
  • Timed Assignments
  • EPQ
  • Tutor predictions

It is therefore of key importance that students attend their lessons via Microsoft Teams and keep in contact with their Personal Tutors regarding university applications, and it will be essential for all of our students next term to ensure that they have the highest attendance possible and attend all of their lessons and 1:1 sessions.
