Earlier in the Spring term, Professor Heales from University College London (UCL) delivered a presentation to A level Biology students here at MPW London. This taster of how Biochemistry can be applied to treat diseases and improve the quality of life for those affected, made for an interesting and enjoyable talk that inspired many students.

Professor Heales effortlessly linked our curriculum with further knowledge that he provided, piquing our interest in careers and opportunities within biochemical research. He discussed metabolic diseases, both historical cases and modern-day cases, as well as the science and ‘detective work’ behind therapies and treatments that can vastly improve symptoms.

Professor Heales particularly highlighted the importance of understanding metabolic pathways within the human body. The varying degrees of depth and complexity of topics within the talk made for a fascinating and enlightening presentation, that we were lucky to receive. The talk inspired many students who have ambitions to develop their biochemical studies at university and beyond.
