Head of Maths – Dave Costin
Dave has a degree in Maths from the University of London. He worked at MPW London from 2006 to 2008 and then rejoined in 2018 becoming Head of Maths in 2021. Dave has been teaching Maths for over 30 years, including spells working at Duff Miller and Lansdowne Colleges. He was an examiner for Edexcel between 1990 and 2010, during which time he marked over 5,000 A level papers. Dave also worked for a software company for many years.
Role at MPW
Most of my day-to-day work is teaching Maths and Further Maths at A level. I also teach Maths on Easter Revision courses every year. As Head of Maths, I allocate students and teachers to classes and I also arrange the schedule of class tests, exam practices and mock exams. The Maths department boasts capable and dedicated teachers who relish the challenge of getting students the grades year after year.
Tell us About You
I enjoy teaching and get a buzz from helping students understand stuff they didn’t understand before. I am a father and a grandfather; a long-suffering Tottenham Hotspur season ticket holder and I speak Icelandic to a reasonable standard. One of my daughters has twice been crowned “the fittest woman on Earth” (as CrossFit World Champion).
Tips for Future MPW Students
If you are looking at going into something mathematical at university then you should consider taking Double Maths (Maths A level and Further Maths A Level). Many university courses in the areas of Maths, Physics, Computing and Engineering prefer Further Maths, and increasingly the ‘top’ universities are requiring Further Maths.
