Kate Brett in Art StudioCeramics, Three-Dimensional Design and Arts Tutor – Kate Brett

Kate holds a first-class BA (Hons) from West Surrey College of Art and Design in Three-dimensional Design, and a MA in Fine Art (Print) from the University of the Arts.

Work History

I joined MPW in 1988, in a part-time capacity, and teach A level Ceramics, and A level Art. I also teach on the Easter Revision courses.

I am a practicing artist and have my own studio alongside working at MPW London. I am represented by two galleries and have a commercial range which has been stocked in a variety of shops including the V&A and Liberty. I have been awarded residencies in Japan, Sydney and Berlin and teach part time at Kingston painting and printmaking.

Why Teaching?

I really like the way that each student approaches art in a very individual way. It is always exciting, and I learn from that as well. I find it very energizing; it is the sharing part of my practice; it is a two-way thing.

Why the Arts?

I like the fact that you can get a piece of clay out of a bag, create something that is very individual and beautiful. You can just make an object or a piece of artwork that is unique to the person that has created it. It is an extremely basic (and primitive) skill that is becoming more essential in a screen-based world.

Describe MPW

Multi-cultural, dynamic, and fun.

About You

I enjoy creating things, it is an intrinsic part of who I am. I also like to keep learning and I am particularly interested in experimental approaches to art techniques.

Any Tips for Future MPW Students

Come with an open mind. Be prepared to push the boundaries. Anything is possible.
