MPW celebrated Chinese New Year on 6th February hosted by two of our students Lola and Jerry.

Just before half term, MPW hosted a special party to welcome in the new Chinese ‘Year of the Pig’. Held in the library and open for everyone to attend, the party was a fantastic opportunity for all our students from Asia to celebrate this important festival, especially for those who couldn’t be back home with their families.

My name is Lola and I hosted the Chinese New Year celebration alongside Jerry (I was really nervous). I was born in Hong Kong and lived there for 14 years before moving to the UK. Chinese New Year was a really big deal in Hong Kong and was always my favourite holiday with a massive fireworks display above the famous harbour and lots of colourful lion dances. So I was really excited to be able to celebrate it again here.

This year’s MPW party was packed with amazing performances and delicious Chinese food, making it feel like I was back in China. Kung-Fu instructor, Master Clebber, and his student Christina performed an action-packed Kung-Fu routine with lots of impressive moves. Many of us attempted to learn the moves, but fell well short of Master Clebber’s high standards.

The party atmosphere was amazing and everyone was buzzing with excitement to see what all the performers had in store for us. The night finished with all the students showing our appreciation for the staff members who attended by giving them samples of traditional rice wine, which I’m sure they really enjoyed!

The Chinese New Year celebrations were really good fun and we all had a great time. So to finish, I’d like to say (xin nian kuai le) and wish everyone at MPW a happy and prosperous Year of the Pig.
