Pretty Basra’s Optometry Journey
From an unclassified grade at A level to achieving AAB and securing an unconditional offer to study optometry at her dream university, read Pretty’s academic journey prior to MPW all the way to her PhD.
Journey to Veterinary School
After Georgia underperformed in her GCSEs at a previous school, she started her A level study in non-science subjects as she was told there was no way she could pursue her dream of becoming a vet. After completing her AS exams, she made the decision to join MPW to study on a one-year GCSE programme, to improve her grades at this level before embarking on a new programme of A level study which would allow her to apply for Veterinary Medicine at university.
The MPW Food Bank
Towards the end of 2020, our Student Council met to discuss how the college could be supporting our wider community more. One of the strategies they decided to pursue was opening a food bank in the Student Common Room which would allow students and staff to contribute food to those in Birmingham who really need it.
Physics Olympiad
At the end of last term, A level Physics students William, Tim and Hugo sat Round 1 of the Physics Olympiad.
World Mental Health Day
In recognition of World Mental Health Day, students and staff spent the day dressed in yellow. Mental health problems can affect anyone, any day of the year, but World Mental Health Day is a great day to show support for better mental health and start looking after your own wellbeing.
Dorset Coast – Geography Field Trip
On the 9th October 2019, MPW Birmingham’s cohort of A level Geography students departed for a residential field trip to the Dorset coast. Students stayed at an award winning field centre only a few minutes walk from Swanage beach.
EPQ Afternoon
This afternoon our EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) students are meeting with their project supervisors to discuss their initial ideas and project proposal. The EPQ offers students the opportunity to complete a piece of research in to their chosen area of interest and then complete a 5,000 word essay on the topic.
Sports Awards Dinner
The Annual Sports Award’s dinner provides the players and management to reflect on the season that was, recall the best goals of the season and enjoy a tasty meal. Perhaps more importantly, votes are taken, and awards are also handed out.
Lapworth Museum of Geology visit
A level Geography students had the opportunity to visit The Lapworth Museum of Geology based in the University of Birmingham to further their knowledge of tectonic plates and hazards. Students were given a comprehensive tour of the museum by expert staff and were shown fossilised remains of prehistoric rhinos that were discovered just outside Birmingham.
