On Monday 20th April, Liberal Democrat MP Julian Huppert came to speak to us about his time in politics, issues with today’s politics and also issues with former politics and political figure heads. Huppert was pressed on a number of issues that surround young people today, with lots of the questions surrounding housing and tuition fees.
On Tuesday the 28th April MPW Birmingham hosted MPW Cambridge in a football match. For several years now the two colleges have entered into a friendly rivalry with matches taking place both home and away. Earlier on in the season we travelled to Cambridge for the first leg and left with a two goals to one victory. It was a close encounter and Birmingham won the game thanks to a wonder strike from Arun Burgess.
Being invited to take part in the first CIFE football tournament which was held at England’s national training facility at St George’s during the Easter break was a unique experience which was possibly the highlight of the year for MPW football. Winning it was the icing on the cake!
MPW Birmingham participated in the first CIFE football tournament which was held at the prestigious Saint George’s Park. This venue will need no introduction to the football fans amongst you because it is an official training venue of the England football team.
Winners of the Autumn Term league and just pipped to the post in the Spring Term, here are the most recent match reports from the MPW first team.
Each year, MPW Birmingham students attend the Annual Model United Nations event at Haileybury College. Run by the various United Nation Associations across the world, it offers students the chance to be a delegate at an ‘as real’ General Assembly.
On the last day of Spring Term, MPW Cambridge raised £182 in just one day for Mercy Ships, a medical charity which carries out life-saving operations from hospital ships around the coast of Africa, including eye operations. See https://www.mercyships.org.uk/the-work.
As part of their volunteering requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh award, our Year 10s organised a very successful Bake Sale to raise funds for Project Harar.
Prize giving is an opportunity for the MPW community to celebrate student achievements from the previous academic year. This year’s prize giving was led by Dr Roger Charlton who is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Nottingham as well as being an active clinician as a GP in Hampton-in-Arden.
