MPW London: Latest News
Four of our top mathematicians represented MPW in the West London heat of the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge, organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme in partnership with the UK Mathematics Trust.
MPW’s rugby team is now in its seventh season. Interest in the sport is extremely high at the college with many of the boys having played the game to a high standard at their previous schools, some to county and International level. We also have many boys who take up the sport successfully for the first time at MPW and represent the1st XV. In our early years MPW was one of the leading teams in the London 6th Form College League having won it for the last two years that it ran.
Football is MPW’s longest-standing team sport, with a fixture list dating back to 1998 that has featured matches against opposition such as Trinity School, Reigate Grammar, Colfe’s and St Dunstan’s. These schools remain regular fixtures, with the exception of Trinity, which has recently been replaced by Royal Russell. Football at MPW includes regular training sessions during the first two terms of the academic year, raising fitness, skills and discipline. It provides an opportunity for participation in a team sport that is similar to the model available at university.
Towards the end of the summer term, the MPW Art Exhibition private view took place and this year there was, as usual, a fantastic range of work to see. All areas of the art department were on display and these included textiles, ceramics and ambitiously staged photography, along with a comprehensive range of painting and drawing.
The MPW Silver assessment expedition was a fun and adventurous journey following the South Downs Link from Guildford to Brighton. For the purpose of the assessment, our team of five cyclists had to demonstrate self-sufficiency by riding at least five hours a day for three days, applying our camp craft training to put up tents and cook food and also by carrying all own gear. Using our orienteering skills and maps, we also had to find our own way through many different villages and unsigned roads. Luckily, the only problems we had were riding in wet weather on the last day and a tyre puncture on our second day.
Handed rucksacks, sleeping bags, roll mats and trangias the group of Year-10 boys all looked blankly back. What had they let themselves in for? And so the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award training and assessment expedition began. With some trepidation and nervous laughter we met at Epic HQ for a 9am start (for most of them anyway) to begin our five days away in the outback, more commonly known as the South Downs.
On Wednesday 19th March, students from MPW were once again privileged to receive prizes awarded by The Council for Independent Education in the august surroundings of The House of Lords. The prizes were awarded this year by Lord Lexden, Honorary President of CIFE. His predecessor, Baroness Perry, gave her name to a special prize, the Baroness Perry Award, which went to Alexia Wight for her outstanding achievements in all of her subjects.
‘Target Two Point Zero - The Interest Rate Challenge’, an annual competition run by The Bank of England and The Times newspaper, gives teams of students aged 16-18 the chance to take on the role of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, assess economic conditions and the outlook for inflation and tell panels of judges what monetary policy they would set to achieve the Government’s inflation target of 2.0%.

MPW students and staff have raised funds for a number of good causes during the Autumn Term. The Christmas Carol Service included a collection that raised a total of over £620 for the excellent Kids Company, a charity founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996 to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children.
