Andrew CorrieAndrew Corrie – Chemistry Tutor

Andrew holds an MA in Biochemistry from Oxford, a PhD in Biochemistry from UCL, and a Diploma in Computer Science from Cambridge.

Work History

Before MPW I worked as a private tutor for a few years and prior to that, I was working for a scientific software engineering company in Cambridge, creating applications for materials sciences and life sciences. I joined MPW in 2009 as an A level Chemistry tutor at MPW Cambridge and I’ve also taught on the Easter Revision Programme.

Why teaching and MPW?

For a few years, I taught undergraduate students whilst a post-doc at Cambridge. Having enjoyed that, once my family arrived, I thought teaching would be a good way ahead. I love the staff and students at MPW – they are very friendly, motivated and hardworking, and that makes it a very rewarding teaching experience. My favourite aspect of teaching Chemistry is seeing students learn to solve problems as they develop their understanding and hone their logical skills.

Andrew beyond the classroom

Outside of work, I’m mainly a dad but also find time for gardening, running, cycling, sailing and reading. My favourite novel is probably War and Peace – don’t be intimidated by its reputation!

Tips for chemistry students

Find some aspect of the subject that you find interesting: if you enjoy it, with enough dedication you can end up being good at it. Try and read about general science – there are so many excellent popular science books these days – and this will help you be able to see the real-world application of the topics discussed on the course. Some of the challenges we face today may well have answers to be found by the next generation of chemists.
