On Wednesday 19th March, students from MPW were once again privileged to receive prizes awarded by The Council for Independent Education in the august surroundings of The House of Lords. The prizes were awarded this year by Lord Lexden, Honorary President of CIFE. His predecessor, Baroness Perry, gave her name to a special prize, the Baroness Perry Award, which went to Alexia Wight for her outstanding achievements in all of her subjects.
‘Target Two Point Zero - The Interest Rate Challenge’, an annual competition run by The Bank of England and The Times newspaper, gives teams of students aged 16-18 the chance to take on the role of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, assess economic conditions and the outlook for inflation and tell panels of judges what monetary policy they would set to achieve the Government’s inflation target of 2.0%.
On Wednesday 27th February students studying towards A level Religious Studies attended an Ethics Conference in Cambridge. The sessions covered some of the topics discussed at A level, including Kantian Ethics, Utilitarianism and Abortion. It was a great opportunity to look at the latest research and statistics and the views of Dr. Peter Vardy and Charlotte Vardy were certainly thought provoking.
Julian started with a brief introduction into the role of the Government in the United Kingdom and how parliament operates before asking for questions from the floor. The students were initially a little reticent, but once education and Michael Gove’s plans for the future were discussed the debate gained considerably in momentum.
It’s not every day that a world record holder visits our college but when Paula Radcliffe came to us during February there was obvious excitement. Before we go onto what Paula presented to students let’s just remind ourselves about Paula’s career achievements and gain further insight into her life. Paula’s achievements include European Championships gold medallist in the 10,000m, World Championships gold medallist in the marathon, twice winner of the world cross country championships, winner of the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award and she is the current world record holder for the Marathon.
